Home Maintenance Checklist: January to March.

Deb Lee

Maintaining your home is key to ensuring its longevity and comfort. As the festive season fades and winter begins to transition into spring, the first quarter of the year is the perfect time to tackle specific maintenance tasks to prepare your home for the changing seasons. Here’s a handy checklist to guide you from January through to March:

January: Winter Care

  1. Inspect Your Heating System

    • Check radiators for cold spots and bleed them if necessary.

    • Ensure your boiler has been serviced recently to prevent unexpected breakdowns.

  2. Clear Gutters and Downpipes

    • Remove any debris from gutters to prevent water blockages and potential leaks during heavy downfalls or snow melt.

  3. Protect Against Freezing

    • Insulate exposed pipes in lofts, basements and outdoor areas.

    • Leave heating systems on low during freezing temperatures to prevent pipes from bursting.

  4. Check for Drafts

    • Inspect windows and doors for cold air leaks and apply weatherstripping or draught excluders where needed.

February: Mid-Winter Tune-Up

  1. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

    • Replace batteries and test all alarms to ensure they’re functioning correctly.

  2. Inspect the Roof

    • Look for missing tiles, cracks, or other damage caused by winter storms.

    • Consider hiring a professional for a more thorough inspection.

  3. Deep Clean Carpets

    • Winter often brings dirt and mud indoors. A deep-clean helps refresh your home and helps to prevent long-term damage.

  4. Check Outdoor Lighting

    • Ensure that all outdoor lights are working, especially around pathways and entrances, as evenings are still dark.

March: Preparing for Spring

  1. Clean Windows and Frames

    • Remove grime and condensation buildup from winter. Don’t forget the windowsills and tracks.

  2. Inspect Your Garden and Outdoor Areas

    • Clear debris, prune shrubs, and check for winter damage to fencing or decking.

    • Start planning for spring planting if you maintain a garden.

  3. Service Your Lawn Equipment

    • Test lawnmowers and other gardening equipment to ensure that they are ready for the spring.

  4. Check Exterior Paint and Walls

    • Look for peeling paint or cracks in masonry that may have worsened during the winter. Schedule repairs if needed.

Bonus Tip

o   Stock Up on Essentials: Ensure you have salt or grit for icy driveways and paths during unexpected cold snaps.

By breaking your home maintenance tasks into manageable chunks, you can keep your home running smoothly through the winter months and prepare it for the warmer days ahead. Happy maintaining!
